What Is Chiropractic?

Welcome to the wonderful world of Chiropractic! Chiropractic was discovered in America over one hundred years ago, although the ancient Chinese have used spinal manipulation since approximately 2700 B.C. to improve health. Chiropractic is a natural, drugless approach to health. It is the largest and fastest growing provider of alternative health care. The chiropractic model of health care is a radical departure from the medical model of drugs and surgery. The chiropractic approach is simple. Chiropractors realize that the spine is the key to good health, and they maintain the health of the spine by providing specific spinal adjustments.

The purpose of the adjustments is to allow a person's nervous system function optimally, when this occurs true health is achieved.

Chiropractors are not pain, neck, or back doctors, they are really nerve doctors. According to Gray's Anatomy, the nervous system is the master system, it controls the entire body. It does this through a pathway of nerves, which travel to virtually every part of your body: skin, hair, organs, hands and feet. The brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system) send and receive messages through nerves which exit the spinal cord through holes in the spine. Unlike the brain which is completely encased by the skull, the spinal cord and its roots are only slightly protected by the spine so that the spine can perform its other function-mobility. When a trauma occurs or a person has chronically bad posture or poor nutrition, one of the 24 moveable vertebrae can become fixated, which subsequently can cause the nerves which exit the vertebrae to become impinged. The impingement causes the function of that nerve, whether it goes to your biceps, stomach or skin, to decrease. Thus, when the structure of the spine is impaired, the function of its nerves, and accordingly their body parts will be reduced. This is what chiropractors call subluxation. A subluxation occurs when the vertebrae shifts out of alignment and causes pressure on a nerve. This pressure causes nervous interference, therefore altering the nerves function. When the nerves are not functioning optimally, they cause dysfunction and disease within the body.

This is the fundamental cause of all disease. When patients visit a chiropractor with an array of symptoms like: headache, allergies, fatigue, fever, heartburn, indigestion, or backaches, the chiropractor looks to the cause of these symptoms, the subluxation. When a person realizes that the symptoms are not the cause, but the effect of their problems, then they see what powerful and important component chiropractic is to their health. Symptoms are the last sign of dysfunction in the body, not the first. Therefore, by the time the symptoms present themselves the problem has been well manifested. Regular chiropractic care is vital to your health. Staying subluxation-free is the most important way to continue healing to promote a healthier, stronger body with more energy, less stress and greater resistance to disease.

We, here at Bristow Physical Therapy & Chiropractic urge everyone to get their spines checked in order to stay subluxation-free. Remember, it is easier to stay well, than get well.
